MATTHEW BOADI ADJEI, Board Chairman

Matthew is the founder and CEO of Oasis Capital Ghana Limited. He has several years’ investment banking experience, nine of which have been spent in the private equity and growth capital industry.

He leads the team on strategy, negotiations, fund raising, investor relations and support. Prior to Oasis, Matthew was a board member of GroFin Ghana Limited as well as the Country General Manager. He was also a member of the Investment Committee of GroFin Africa Fund, a Mauritius based Pan-Africa SME fund, where he appraised transactions from Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Before that he was an Investment Manager with Fidelity Capital Partners Limited, a Ghanaian private equity firm. He spent over 9 years with Fidelity Group working with the Group’s credit, corporate finance and private equity practice.

He is a familiar presence in the small business development universe in Ghana, having given lectures on SMEs in various universities and colleges. He currently serves on the boards of Chase Petroleum Ghana Limited, Goldkey Properties Limited and The Akua Kuenyehia Foundation. He is also, the chairman of Asterix Brokers Limited, an insurance brokerage firm he founded in 2007 that provides insurance broking services to SMEs in Ghana.

Matthew holds a BSc degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Ghana and an MBA from the Leicester Business School, De Montfort University, UK.

BAFFOUR AKOTO OSEI,
Chief Executive Officer

Baffour is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Project Manager with 20 years’ experience in civil engineering in Ghana and the United Kingdom.

He worked for 4 years in Ghana on numerous construction projects including Kotoka Airport Expansion, Takoradi Thermal Power Station, World Trade Centre Building, Golden Star Resources Bogosu Mine Tailings Dam, Satellite Goldfields Mining Bulk Earthworks. After a Master’s degree in 2002, he joined the River Engineering and then Bridge Engineering Divisions of Halcrow Group Limited and rose to become a Consultant Engineer and Project Manager.

In 2005, he joined Tube Lines Ltd as a Discipline Engineer responsible for Lift and Escalator Structures on the London Underground. Baffour returned to Ghana in 2007 and has been the Chief Executive and a Board Member of the company to date.

BENEDICTA MAWUENA OSEI, Executive Director

Mawuena is highly skilled in the areas of customer service and satisfaction, organizational development, operations management, personnel development and employee behavioral management. Her passion for creativity, mentoring, self- development and achieving excellence is exhibited across all the divisions of the company.

She is a co-founder of GHS Housing and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Ghana and an MBA from the University of Leicester, UK. She is also a member of the Institute of Directors Ghana.

MICHAEL NANA SARFO, Board Member

Nana has over 18 years experience in the investment banking industry in Ghana. Prior to founding Bora Capital, Nana was the CEO of Fidelity Securities where he worked for over 5 years.

He has previously worked as a Regional Investment Officer in Ecobank Capital, where he led over $200mn in capital market deals in West and Central Africa and served as a key member of the team that structured the raising of $2.5bn equity capital for the Ecobank Group. He also served as Head of Corporate Finance at Merchant Bank Ghana where he led key M&A transactions including the AngloGold Ashanti merger, Société Genérale’s acquisition of SSB Bank and the public offers of Ghana Breweries, Accra Brewery, Mechanical Lloyd and HFC Bank.

Nana has an MBA from Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota in the USA, BA Economics and Computer Science from the University of Ghana and an ACIB (Chartered Banker) from England & Wales.

ALEXANDER SMITS van OYEN, Board Member

Alexander Smits van Oyen is a Non-Executive Director of Oasis Capital Ghana Limited. Alex is one of the originators, founders and current Managing Director of Social Venture Capital Fund I BV (SOVEC), Holland based venture capital fund set up in 2007 to invest in SME’s in Africa. As MD of SOVEC, Alex is responsible for identifying opportunities and investing in Africa, portfolio management and setting up partnerships.

SOVEC is currently focused on West Africa, especially Ghana, and has invested in a local private equity firm targeting the mid-market in Ghana. Alex also serves on the board of the Fund. Alex has been actively involved in setting up CDI Netherlands and in the development of CDI Global at international level for over 20 years. He concentrated on M&A involving cross-border deals in industries ranging from IT hardware distribution to pharmaceuticals and business services.

In addition, he worked with diverse private equity and financial restructuring that involves privately or family-owned companies. He is a member of DCFA (Dutch M&A Specialists) and an associated member of NVP (Dutch Venture Capital Association). Formerly, he worked with APM, the venture capital arm of ABN AMRO Bank. Alex currently serves on various (business and foundation) boards. 

Alex holds a BA degree in Economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam and an MBA from Technical University Delft (Interfaculteit Bedrijfskunde). Alex is Dutch and speaks Dutch, English, French, German and a bit of Italian.

CATHERINE ENGMANN, Board Secretary

Catherine Engmann is the Director of Platinum Corporate Solutions Limited. She is a Chartered Secretary with over 12 years experience in regulatory, governance and core company secretarial activities as well as corporate restructurings and acquisitions

Before founding PCS, Catherine was Group Company Secretary at a Financial Services Company based in Ghana and prior to that, was Deputy Company Secretary at Mouchel Group plc, a FTSE 250 Company listed on the London Stock Exchange. Catherine is also familiar with the United States Securities & Exchange Commission regulatory regime through her experience working at multinational listed companies such as the InterContinental Hotels Group, British Sky Broadcasting Corporation and Reuters. 

Catherine has a degree in Biotechnology, is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in the UK (ICSA) and has an ICSA certificate in Employee Share Plans, a course developed in conjunction Linklaters.
